Being a semi-entrepreneur is not sophisticated, it’s not online-only, it’s not a Sip Coffee and Let the Big Bucks Roll In scheme. The products that don’t sell are currently stuffed into my basement a.k.a. Qualy De La Grande a.k.a. my makeshift storage room #1. Our garage is also packed with random boxes that customers have sent back, along with my hopes and dreams. Here are some exclusive looks to Qualitrusty’s BTS:

boxes that need to be recycled

This is just a quick update about how I’m doing in terms of Amazon’s standards: I’m finally in the green! This is the first time I’ve ever been in this position, which honestly makes me so happy. My Inventory Performance Index—or a fancy term of how great of a seller you are based on your current inventory—has always been in the low 300s. Every time I open up my account to check the statistics, the number’s always glaringly red and low. I’m in the bottom 40% of sellers worldwide, it’s cool, and I’ve accepted the fact that as a high schooler, I won’t get as much done as others. But Amazon doesn’t know that. I’ve been upping my game with Instagram marketing, messaging old reviewers if they’d like to try new products, advertising new products, and keeping up with others’ posts to stay in the game. I also spent a couple days sporadically entering and exiting random Facebook groups related to the products I sell, in hopes of getting a couple more customers to make the number rise. It’s not just an ego thing—if the IPI stays in the red, sellers won’t be able to send as many products to the warehouse for customers to buy. This basically limits the potential revenue they could earn, as well as the visibility on Amazon. In short, this is Amazon’s stealthy way of getting people to work harder and buy products on their website. Because my IPI has always been low, I was used to seeing the high numbers of excess units, days in inventory, etc. Until tonight! After increasing 10 points over the last week, it’s now 356. It sounds great until you see it’s out of 1000. 356 out of 1000 means not even halfway there… but hey, it’s the small wins. My sell-through (how many products people buy compared to other sellers) is still low, but at least I’ve managed to make it in the clear! I’m going to try to keep it there as long as I can, so I won’t have to worry about Amazon’s policies. This may seem over-the-top—I mean, it’s literally ten points. But I’m just really excited about those ten points. Thanks, Amazon!

Running was a sport I hated for the majority of my life. I hated the idea of 1. getting up and 2. actually using my legs. I hated rollercoasters as a kid (and still do), and abhorred anything that went too fast or made me dizzy. However, that mindset changed when I entered high school. Cue the abysmal amounts of homework smashing into faces, exams rolling in like haystacks on a farm, and annoying TI-84 calculator clicks whenever math teachers handed out tests. All of a sudden, I had to learn FAST, do FAST, be FAST. And while initially it gave me whiplash, eventually I began to see the benefits of adopting this speedy mentality.

The mindset of moving faster allowed me to test out new ideas and products quickly. If a product wasn’t working, I moved on. Of course, I lost money along the way, but this attitude of constantly trying enabled me to find a couple products that could actually stick in. This sense of urgency during the early days of my company drove me to obsess over what products the customers wanted, the strategies other sellers employed, and how I could emulate their ideas to create success. Facebook’s motto is “Move Fast and Break Things,” which I actually found after I had the idea to write this post (I guess Mark figured this out before I could). It’s imperative that every self-starting individual with absolutely no experience works quickly and efficiently without a broken heart. Looking back on my accidental approach, I don’t regret it at all. I ended up earning back the losses I accumulated during the first few months, and now have products that customers like to buy. While it is equally important to see the details of every situation to make the most informed decision, especially when starting a small company, it is essential to move like a torpedo and test out strategies until one actually works. And so, I have finally realized that true entrepreneurs are just like little children: they move fast and break things.

These blog posts are meant to document my journey through this start-up. I’ve waited a while to see actual results, the good and the bad, and I’m psyched to be able to share my progress to budding entrepreneurs and ambitious self-starters alike.

I’m particularly excited about this blog because I love to write. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been documenting memories into handmade scrapbooks crafted of printer paper and yarn. I wrote my first novel at 15 under a pseudonym and published all 235 pages a year and a half later, and I recently also delved into poetry, prose, and film scripts. There’s just something so captivating in words holding our thoughts together for eternity. Unfortunately, I stopped writing for a while to make my educational dreams come true, but this blog is the perfect way to motivate myself to continue to invent.

This blog is about risks, failure, laughter and tears. It’s all the mistakes I’ve made that have led up to what Qualitrusty is today. It’s behind-the-scenes work that no one ever gets to see. It’s my promise to myself to continue and let success crown my endeavors. To me, it’s the beginning of invention.

Because this is probably once-in-a-lifetime, I just wanted to update ya’ll about this crazy situation. Basically, I received a customer about a month ago who ordered an exorbitant amount of bench covers. I clicked on the profile for the name, did a search, and found that she lived in the same state as me. More than that, she had graduated from my current high school, but ten years ago. In my excited state, I sent her a quick email explaining that no, I wasn’t a stalker, and yes, I was so happy that we came from the same background.

It was a pretty surreal moment, given the fact that it’s difficult to find a customer who went to the same high school, with over hundreds of millions of customers shopping online. What are the odds of her stumbling across my page? I still consider it a great moment, and though she never responded, it still makes me happy to think that I’m serving customers within driving distance and across oceans. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the first blog post! Prime Day was Monday of this week, and boy, was it eventful. First off, ever since the launch of this small company last year, I’ve heard of the great wonders of Prime Day. The true magnifying impact it had hit me on the head when I was researching a little about how to boost sales during the infamous day. From hilarious Tweets to critical opinion pieces on the effect Amazon has had on Toys R Us, there truly was a myriad of information flowing to publicize the event. One tweet even read, “#PrimeDay is exactly like Christmas, except instead of celebrating the birth of Jesus, you celebrate saving $20 off an Echo Dot.” Needless to say, I was stoked for the spike of revenue I’d receive within the 36 hours, a leg up from my usual sale velocity.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Amazon couldn’t handle the huge traffic surged caused by the popularity of the event which led to a cascading series of errors. When I woke up to check Amazon, I had hoped to see dozens of products and the next best sale; however, I was greeted with a ‘Sorry’ in a minimalistic font and a German shepherd named Barney. Everywhere, news articles spoke of Amazon’s pages and strange dogs appearing on their websites. CNET’s top headline read “Prime Day 2018 and the 404 Dogs of Amazon.” What a ruff way to start off a historic day.

I know I’m not on the best of terms with Jeff Bezos (we recently had a falling-out after he stole my hair tie), but I must say Prime day wasn’t prime for me. My anticipation of my first Prime day as a seller and not a buyer, almost as noteworthy as my first birthday or first homecoming, had blown through the wind like a plastic bag. Though I’m sure Jeff probably ended up firing about 500 tech employees that day, it was still noteworthy in that Amazon’s blow-up caused a string of blow-ups of hundreds of news sources reporting on the catastrophe. And though it may still be seen as a calamity, the statistics prove otherwise: over 100 million products were sold during the 36 hour event, and Prime Day was declared the biggest shopping event in company history. This shows how integral Amazon is in our society today—not many companies can sell hundreds of millions within a time frame of less than two days, can get away with Error pages of excuses and pugs, and still make it out with popularity unscathed. I’m proud to be part of an organization that champions the use of the Internet (and dogs) to bring products to customers worldwide. Prime Day may not have been the glowing image everyone perceived, but I learned a lot more about Amazon in those 36 hours. The company bounced back, handled the angry customers, and still made it out on top despite competing customers. To Amazon, every day is prime day.
